Sound, Health, and the Built Environment

Sound does more than reach our ears. It resonates through the body and the mind. The Resonance Research Institute is dedicated to understanding the therapeutic effects of sound and sharing that knowledge with clinicians, researchers and anyone curious about how sound and music support health.
Our work focuses on two connected areas: music psychotherapy and low-frequency sound research. This website introduces published research and articles in both fields, with a particular focus on low-frequency sound and music medicine.

Exploring the healing power of sound

  • Music Psychotherapy: How music helps people process emotion, recover from trauma and move toward greater well-being, including the group analytic music therapy model.
  • Music and Medicine: A new direction exploring how specific musical elements may influence the way the body metabolizes certain medications.
  • Low-frequency Sound in the built environment
An emerging area of inquiry — low-frequency sound produced by modern infrastructure, such as data centers, cooling systems and the electrical grid,

Researching Sound’s Influence

Dr. Heidi Ahonen leads research into how low-frequency sound shapes human health, built environments, and community life.

Low Frequency Vibrations, the Brain, and Neurodegenerative Disease

Research at Resonance Research Institute examines how low-frequency vibrations may interact with the body and brain, with particular attention to neurological processes potentially associated with Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease, supporting informed collaboration across scientific disciplines.

Interdisciplinary Research in Sound, Health, and Infrastructure

We connect acoustics, neuroscience, health sciences, engineering, and environmental analysis through evidence-based investigation.
